CONWAY, SC (WBTW)- Jury selection began Monday morning for a Conway woman accused of killing her husband two years ago.
Prosecutors say Heather Causey-Sims killed her husband David Sims in their home on August 11, 20-13. Causey maintains she was acting in self defense when she shot and killed her husband.
The final jury consists of seven men, five women and three alternates. Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson says each of the jurors had to fill out a questionnaire, which is typical in death penalty cases. Heather Causey-Sims does not face the death penalty, but Richardson says the jurors must be carefully selected.
“I think in this case you’ve got a lot more information on potential jurors than you usually do in these sort of cases,” said Richardson.
Sims challenged the murder charge in July, claiming Stand Your Ground. Both sides presented evidence and witness testimonies. According to Richardson, anything said under oath in July can be used during the trial.
Richardson says he’s not surprised the public has taken an interest in the case.
“You’ve got a family who have been in Conway for a long time with the Causeys,” stated Richardson. “You have Sims family that is traditionally from Florence, but both sides are well though of in the community. You just don’t expect this kind of behavior.”
Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday morning. Count on News 13 for continued coverage.
