LADSON, SC – A teenager shot and killed a burglar who he says was trying to break into his home.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased man as 31-year-old Lamar Brown of Summerville.
Authorities also arrested a 28-year-old North Charleston man named Ira J. Bennett and charged him with first degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
News 2 spoke with several neighbors who said they ducked for cover and hid behind chairs as shots rang out.
John Griffin says he and his girlfriend were sitting in their driveway on Elderwood Drive Tuesday afternoon when he heard gunfire from a neighbor’s yard.
Griffin described the shooting to News 2 by saying, “We heard like four or five gunshots coming from the back and then a car came creeping from the backyard. It went slow and then the dude went in the front door and he just started shooting his gun, so I ducked down and she ran in the house.”
Authorities say a 13-year-old was home alone and reported hearing someone trying to break into his house.
We’re told the teen retrieved his mother’s gun and went to the back door.
The report says he saw the suspect, now identified as Lamar Brown of Summerville, trying to break into his house. Officials say he fired the gun through the door and Brown reportedly fired back.
We’re told Brown got away in a silver car. The driver took Brown to Trident Hospital where he died from gunshot wounds.
Witnesses told News 2 the silver getaway car had been parked behind the home for an extended period of time before shots were heard.
However, authorities have not said any more about this case other than it was an attempted burglary.
