A 74-year-old woman was attacked then carjacked while gardening at her church in Hanahan Saturday morning, authorities say.
At approximately 10:30pm Saturday night the woman’s vehicle was recovered in North Charleston. Two black males are in custody. Police have not said if the either of the men are responsible for the attack. Police have charged Charles Lajuan Belton and Davon Flythe with possession of a stolen vehicle.
According a police report, the victim was removing bushes from the side of Yeaman’s Park Presbyterian on Murray Drive when an African American man came up behind her and told he didn’t want to hurt her and that he just wanted her car. The suspect reportedly choked the victim until she was unconscious. When the victim woke up, her Hyundai SUV was gone.
The woman had injuries to her nose as well as bruising around her neck and was taken to a local hospital.
A representative for Yeaman’s Park Presbyterian says nothing like this has happened before and they will discuss the incident at their next elders meeting.
