The chase involved a late model Chevrolet Camaro and started around 2 p.m. on Sunday on northbound US 1 north of Southern Pines, officials said.
A Carthage man who was driving is now facing several charges, including DWI, authorities told the Aberdeen Times.
The chase lasted several miles and was at times in opposing traffic lanes, according to authorities. At one point, the Camaro hit another vehicle, but the occupants were not hurt, the newspaper reported.
The Camaro eventually hit the side of a bridge over the railroad tracks at Belk Lumber, causing a flat tire, but the chase only slowed down slightly, officials said.
About a mile further to the north the car turned left onto Valley View Road where a “PIT maneuver” by a Dodge Charger cruiser — driven by Sgt. Stahl of the NC Highway Patrol — brought the driver to a stop.
No one was injured in the chase or minor crash.
The chase first began when Southern Pines Police tried to stop the driver of the Camaro for speeding at US Highway 1 and Pennsylvania Avenue, officials told the Aberdeen Times.
However, the driver didn’t stop and exited US 1 in the area of Midland Road by driving the wrong way on an entrance ramp, the newspaper reported.
During that move, a NC State Highway Patrolman happened to be driving onto US 1 at the same time and joined the pursuit. The Camaro then got back on US Highway 1 traveling north in the southbound lanes, officials said.
Michael Gregg Wall, age 56, from a Red Branch Road in Carthage faces charges from both the Southern Pines Police Department and the NC State Highway Patrol, the Aberdeen Times reported.
The charges include driving while impaired, flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle, felony flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle, two counts of hit and run, failing to stop for a blue light and siren, reckless driving, driving the wrong way on a dual lane highway and speeding 135 in a 55 mph zone, the Aberdeen Times reported.
Wall was transported to the Moore County Detention Center where he was held under a $12,500 secure bond. His first scheduled date in court is December 8.
The Camaro had to be towed from the scene and was seized by authorities, the Aberdeen Times reported.
The NC Trooper’s Dodge Charger only had a couple of small dents.
