CONWAY (WBTW) — Attorneys for the man who police say killed an Horry County woman early last year want a judge to disqualify the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s office from prosecuting the case because of what they call a conflict of interest.
Solicitor Jimmy Richardson confirmed to News13 that defense attorney Morgan Martin, who is representing 48-year-old Randy Robinson, filed a motion to disqualify Richardson’s office because it recently hired Christopher Helms. Helms was formerly a public defender who was involved in Robinson’s defense early in the case.
Richardson told News13 on Wednesday that the date for a hearing on this particular motion has not been set and if the judge grants the motion, it would not affect where the case is tried, just who prosecutes.
Robinson is charged with the murder of 32-year-old Angie Pipkin.
Authorities say Robinson killed Pipkin and disposed of her dismembered body at a Landing on the Great Pee Dee River in Darlington County.
Pipkin was last seen on January 16, 2014 getting into a car at the IGA on Main Street in Aynor, officials say. She was later seen on security cameras around 9:30 p.m. at the Wilco Food Mart at 6222 Highway 707 in Myrtle Beach.
On May 14, 2014, investigators announced remains found in East Florence off Paper Mill Road belonged to Pipkin.
Robinson is charged with murder and obstruction of justice and is in jail without bail at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
