TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) —Talk about a bad hair day!

Chances are you’ve seen an infomercial or two for Wen Hair Care. Celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean hawks the so-called revolutionary line of shampoos and conditioners, which are guaranteed to make your hair shine like a superstar.

But more than 200 people from 40 different states have filed a class action lawsuit against Wen Hair Care and its parent company, Guthy-Renker, claiming Wen caused them to go bald.

The lawsuit claims one or more of Wen’s active ingredients act as a depilatory agent, causing a chemical reaction that damages hair.

Steven Carde has been styling hair in Tampa for more than a decade and explains how crucial the precise formula of hair care products is.

“For example, you can take eggs, butter, milk and sugar, and depending on the order in which you put them together, your outcome can be very different. It’s the same with a hair product,” Carde said.

To avoid a hairy situation, he advises always sitting down with your actual hair stylist and not the one on TV in order to figure out what product will work best for your hair.

“They use them every day, so they get feedback from their clients that speaks to how the product is working. They are less likely to jump from product to product. They are going to stick with one that works,” Carde said.

In addition to those infomercials, Wen is available through Amazon and in Sephora stores.

Guthy-Renker, the marketing company behind Wen, released a statement to NBC News. It says:

“There is no scientific evidence to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to Wen hair products.”
