Traffic relief possible to heavily developed portion of Socastee

SOCASTEE, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Leaders say traffic relief could be coming to areas in Socastee that have seen a lot of development.

Traffic comes from six different directions at the intersection of Palmetto Pointe Boulevard and Highway 17.

“Very scary, it’s scary in the morning and scary in the evening; there is so many accidents on the corner of Palmetto Pointe,” said Julie Dyer.

Dyer lives off of Palmetto Pointe Boulevard.

Monday the Horry County School District announced its purchase of a piece of land off of Highway 17 for a new Socastee area school.

Dyer says she is worried what traffic will be like when the school comes.

“I said to my husband that’s going to bring more traffic in when we have a junior high down the road. He said maybe it’s time to sell our home we can sell it to a family with some kids. They’d love it,” said Dyer.

Another issue is Palmetto Pointe Boulevard only has one way in and one way out; so if anything were to happen like when it flooded in October people who live on the road are trapped.

But hope may be on the horizon.

Horry County District 6 Council Member, Cam Crawford, says Palmetto Pointe could be widened and extended to 544 under the Ride III program.

“It’s a good example of a project that’s worthy of in investment,” said Crawford.

However even if  Palmetto Pointe Boulevard makes the final Ride III cut it would be years before any changes happen.

News 13 reached out to the Horry County School District to see if they have any plans to deal with the possibility of increased traffic flow with the new Socastee school, however no one responded.
