COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Lower gas prices likely means a record number of people from South Carolina hitting the road for the holidays.

AAA Carolinas said in a news release that it expects nearly 1.4 million South Carolinians to travel at least 50 miles away from home during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period. That is about 20,000 more people than last year.

Those drivers will spend less money. AAA Carolina says the average price statewide for a gallon of gas is $1.79 – 50 cents lower than the same time last ear.

The travel group also is reminding drivers the holidays are one of the most dangerous times of the year. Last holiday season, 42 people died on South Carolina roads from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3.
