MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) – A former clerk for Charleston County Magistrate’s Court has been arrested and charged with taking more than $4,500.
Multiple media outlets reported that 31-year-old Heather Elizabeth Hughes of Mount Pleasant is charged with breach of trust.
Court documents state that an auditor notified officials that nearly $4,500 in petty cash was missing from the magistrate’s office between Nov. 6 and Dec. 1. Prosecutors say the cash was removed from bank deposit bags.
Charleston County spokeswoman Natalie Hauff said Hughes was fired last week. It was not clear if she has a lawyer.
Hughes had worked for the county about two-and-a-half years.
