MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- For the third year, The Market Common will host a Southern Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration.
The event starts Thursday night at 7pm but organizers were in the Market Common at 6 a.m. setting up barricades and tents.
Last year’s event brought in around 7,000 people and organizers say they hope the rain doesn’t decrease that number this year.
“We’re hoping not, we’re hoping they look at it the same as they would if they were in New York City, Times Square and they’ll still come out and enjoy the festivities with us,” Market Common General Manager Heather Gray said.
This year the event will also include a Kid Zone and new ball to drop at midnight that has 96 additional LED lights.
Myrtle Beach Police will also patrol the event and use new equipment like the Sky Watch tower and surveillance cameras to keep an eye on things.
“Certainly, anytime you get a large crowd together-you certainly want to take various precautions to make sure there is no type of violence and if there is, it’s taken care of very quickly. So therefore, we’ll be utilizing our equipment that we have such as the sky watch tower, uniforms and officers training to make sure this is a very good event as it has been in years past,” Lt. Joey Crosby said.
There will be a fireworks show and the ball drops at midnight.
