MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Three families in Marlboro County left their homes on Rocky Ridge Road Saturday afternoon as they wait for water to drain from their yards from the recent rainfall this past week.
“So we basically have to walk through the woods to our neighbor’s house and go through their yard and come out, as you can see down here and walk back and forth,” said homeowner and mother of four Alice Peterkin.
People who live in the county will have to be put on a waiting list because of similar problems across the area, which could take up to a month or more.
“I just don’t understand why it’s going to take us so long to get some help here,” Peterkin said.
Dara and Karyn Douglas are in the same boat. They’ve been living in their home for more than eighteen years and never seen anything like it.
“Once the ditch filled up, the water started coming into my yard and all of our yards,” mentioned Dara Douglas.
The water is so deep in some places that it’s impossible for residents to reach their doorsteps without getting wet.
“We didn’t even get any water in our yards up here in October,” said Douglas.
“I know in the middle of my yard right now its three and a half feet deep at least because it’s almost coming in my truck right now,” said Jody Jones.
Though the three families are thankful of the Red Cross for putting them in a place to stay some are still worried about the condition of their homes.
“What are we supposed to do after that, I mean we got to wait three months just in order to just get some help and just to get the drainage, the ditches unstopped. The ditches are stopped up, so what are we supposed to do,” explained Peterkin.
“You know it’s kind of disheartening to see, you know the property going down like it is, you know, seeing our neighbors have to deal with what we’re dealing with and having to deal with it ourselves. It’s painful to see it,” said Douglas.
