COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – There was no Powerball jackpot win in South Carolina Wednesday night, but players still need to check their tickets. A record number of winning tickets, more than 366,000, were sold in our state.
Five players won $100,000 and another 11 players won $50,000. More than 200,000 tickets won $4.
Wednesday’s winning numbers for a world record $1.6 billion jackpot were 4, 8,19, 27, 34 and Powerball 10. Three jackpot winning tickets, that matched all six numbers, were sold in California, Tennessee and Florida.
Sioban Smith is the first of South Carolina’s $100,000 winners to come forward. The Columbia resident checked her Powerball ticket at 3 a.m. this morning.
“I’ve never won anything in my life,” she said. “This has made 2016 a little more comfortable.”
She bought her ticket late Wednesday at the Pitt Stop on Dutch Fork Rd. in Ballentine and debated on how much to spend on a chance at the big jackpot that piqued her interest, but settled on $21 in quick picks with PowerPlay.
She told her boyfriend, who was up early getting ready to go duck hunting, that she matched four numbers and the Powerball to win something. They Googled to find out how much and then called the Pitt Stop to be sure it was $100,000. Her next call was to her mom and dad.
Her dad came with her to collect her prize money and said he thinks he won $8 on his Powerball ticket.
“It’s funny,” laughed Smith. “When I bought the ticket, I told the clerk ‘I hope you gave me a winning number.’”
For selling the winning ticket, the Pitt Stop receives a $1,000 commission.
Odds of winning $50,000 playing Powerball are 1 in 913,129. Odds of a 2x multiplier are 1 in 1.75.
