Kevin Tyrone Powell, Jr., 24, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Police said Powell went into the D’Ambience Salon and Spa and shot Derema Burch, who was working at the time. He fled the scene then came back and turned himself in.
“A lady is trying to work and her family member, apparently her child, came and did this to her. Quite frankly, this defies logic. It defies explanation. It continues my frustration with people who use guns improperly or illegally,” said Police Chief Harold Medlock.
Burch, 44, of the 3800 block of Brook Green Drive, is in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Powell was transported to the Cumberland County Detention Center where he remains under a $750,000 secure bond.
The salon advertises as a full-service salon and day spa that has been in business since 2007.
