MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Eight sea turtles stunned by cold weather along the North Carolina coast are being treated in Myrtle Beach.

Ripley’s Aquarium says the green sea turtles were brought to the aquarium’s marine science building for treatment after they were found washed up on beaches along the Pamplico Sound.

The aquarium’s director of husbandry, Tim Handsel, says staffers are working closely with the state Department of Natural Resources in helping the turtles recover.

Cold temperatures in shallow water can stun turtles in a condition similar to hypothermia. When stunned, turtles tend to float to the surface and some wash ashore. Others become easy prey for predators.

Other sea turtles stunned by cold weather farther north in New England are being treated at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston.
