CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Divers with Horry County Fire Rescue pulled a body from the Waccamaw River Tuesday morning in a recovery effort after a car went into the river Monday night.

Chief Dan Shankle says a body was recovered from the water Tuesday morning around 10:40 a.m. Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the victim as Donna Anderson, 66, of Conway, and says the cause of death is apparent drowning.

Horry County Police were also on scene and Lt. Raul Denis says Anderson’s body was discovered still inside the vehicle which went off the road and into the Waccamaw River Monday night.

Witnesses near Lee’s Landing will help officers determine the cause of the crash and police are considering this case a death investigation, adds Lt. Denis.

A wrecker was called to the scene of the crash to pull the vehicle from the water Tuesday morning.

Chief Brian VanAernem with Horry County Fire Rescue says The Horry County Fire Rescue Dive Team deployed divers near Lee’s Landing in Conway Tuesday morning for the recovery effort after reports of a car going into the water late Monday night. VanAernem adds rescuers entered the water around 10 a.m.

A car crashed and went into the water Monday night, too late for divers to enter the river, and that is why divers are calling Tuesday’s search a recovery and not a rescue, confirms VanAernem.
