MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The former Wicked Stick golf course will soon be the site of over 200 homes. The new neighborhood named Belle Mer is being marketed as a natural gas community.

Developer Bill Clark Homes submitted plans to build a total of 218 homes, to be completed in three phases. Phase one consists of 92 lots. Representatives wouldn’t say the price range of the homes.

News13 spoke to residents in the nearby neighborhood of Southwood.

Bill Phenegar moved to Southwood 18 years ago. His home backs up onto what used to be the sixth fairway of Wicked Stick golf course.

“I came from farm country Pennsylvania, so I didn’t know how I’d feel about being housed in,” said Phenegar.

He might have to get used to the idea because construction on over 200 homes has already begun.

“I wonder just how many homes we can take in this area. When is it going to come to a point when it’s overcrowded,” he questioned.

While traffic is a concern, Phenegar says he’s more worried about his property value decreasing.

“I think people are going to be more interested in the new homes than they are these homes here that are 20 years old,” he explained.

The developer expects homes in phase one to start going up in September.

The property that includes Wicked Stick club house is zoned for commercial use. A spokesperson for Horry County says no commercial plans have been submitted yet.
