TIMMONSVILLE, SC — Crews with the South Carolina Department of Transportation worked to pave and paint Highway 76 Tuesday afternoon, as work continues on the road widening project.

The construction has caused a few problems. People who live in the area say they’ve had to make big changes to their daily commute because of traffic.

The project is a total of 3.7 miles long going into and out of Timmonsville.

Residents say they’re ready for the new change, but the biggest problem right now is the traffic.

Jeff Payne was one of those drivers stuck in traffic Tuesday, and says he plans to avoid the area moving forward.

“Traffic has been awful. We came out today about two o’clock to go to a funeral, and waited, you know, fifteen or twenty minutes to get through this mess, and now we’re hitting it again,” said Payne.

Janette Gee says she was stuck in traffic for about twenty minutes Tuesday afternoon, and says the traffic has caused her to make changes to her daily routine.

“If you need to get to work, you don’t need to come this way. It’s going to slow you down,” said Gee.

The project is scheduled to be finished by September 30th of this year, and until then, workers are asking for your patience.

“Traffic, it’s just one of those things, you know. This is something that’s got to get done, you know. We try to be convenient to the general public as much as you can, you know, but sometimes it takes a little longer than expected on the roadways,” says Kenneth Bethea, Senior Inspector for SCDOT.

Crews are working to widen the highway to a four lane road to help traffic move smoothly near the interstate.

“It’s going to take time, and it can’t be in a rush. They want to do it right, and it must be done right.” said Gee.

Crews say they’ve been working on Highway 76 for more than a year now, and this is one of six road widening projects made possible by a voter-approved penny sales tax in the county.

Money from that penny sales tax is also going towards projects on TV Road, US 378, Highway 51, the 301 Bypass, and Pine Needles Road.

Pine Needles Road is the only completed project..

All other projects are scheduled to finish around 2021.
