MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach Police say a suspect is in police custody after he attempted to rob two convenience stores Tuesday morning, police report.

According to an incident report from Myrtle Beach Police, a man entered the Scotchman gas station, located at 1101 3rd Avenue South, around 2:50 a.m. and asked the clerk for a carton of Newport cigarettes. When the clerk requested identification from the man for the purchase, the man reached into his waistband, making it seem as if he had a gun, and shouted, “Open the [expletive] register or I’ll shoot you in your [expletive] face.”

The employee did not give the man any money and quickly moved into the office area to call 911.

Police report the would-be robber then crossed the street and pulled a similar tactic on the clerk at the Circle K gas station, located at 1009 3rd Avenue South. The police report details how the robber shouted at the employee to give him cash from the register or the thief would shoot him.

The employee noted to police that the robber concealed his hand with his shirt during the robbery. The criminal made off with some cash and ran east on 3rd Avenue South, the report states.

Officers identified the robber through video surveillance, obtained warrants for his arrest and Wednesday afternoon announced the offender was taken into police custody. The man’s name is not being released at this time as he has not been formally charged for the crimes.
