Behind the numbers of South Carolina’s presidential primary

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – While Donald Trump’s win by 10 percentage points dominated the headlines after Saturday’s Republican presidential primary, the numbers show other stories too. Nearly 740,000 people cast ballots – shattering the previous record by 132,000 voters.

The numbers show how far the Bush family name has fallen. Jeb Bush finished dead last in Greenville County, where George W. Bush won 59 percent of the vote in 2000.

Remember the joke that John Kasich could do well in Beaufort County because everyone in Ohio moved there? The county did give 19 percent of its vote to the Ohio governor – the only third place finish he had in South Carolina.

And two rapidly growing counties – Horry and Lancaster – doubled their Republican presidential primary votes from 2000 to 2016.
