WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – The Republican race for the White House was thrown into upheaval on Friday after the Governor of New Jersey announced his endorsement of billionaire businessman Donald Trump.

The Trump campaign welcomed Chris Christie to an event in Fort Worth, Texas ahead of the lone star state’s Tuesday election.

“I will lend my support between now and November every way that I can for Donald to make the campaign an even better campaign than it’s already been,” said Gov. Christie on Friday. The former Presidential candidate, who withdrew from the race after a poor performance in New Hampshire, stood side by side while reporters rushed to the impromptu news conference.

The Christie announcement was followed by a nearly hour long rally in Fort Worth where Mr. Trump openly mocked his competition including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

“I watch him backstage.  He’s a mess. The guy’s a total mess,” added Trump on Friday afternoon.

Democrats vote in South Carolina

On Saturday, Democrats will head to the polls in South Carolina to choose between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and current Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. The most recent polls showed Clinton with a commanding lead in the Palmetto state. Sen. Sanders is already focused on Tuesday’s eleven contests being held nationwide.
