MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Current construction on a playground for mentally and physically disabled children could be completed in six weeks, according to Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes.

Crews continue to work to build Savannah’s Playground on a four-acre site at Grand Park in The Market Common. Officials say the park will be built in three separate phases.

Rhodes says work on concrete curbing was recently finished and workers plan to lay gravel on the site next week.

Rhodes told News13 several additional tasks need completed at the site before it can open to the public. Those tasks include drainage, sidewalk and rubber installation.

Current work on the park is expected to be completed and open sometime in early May, according to the mayor. To date, Savannah’s Playground still needs to secure approximately $350,000 in funding.

Savannah’s Playground, which is referred to as an “enabling park,” will include a number of components, such as a music park, swings and a zipline, that will allow children with disabilities to take part.  The playground is named for 19-year-old Savannah Thompson, who plays soccer and baseball with the Grand Strand Miracle Leagues.
