MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Spring break is on the horizon for many local schools, but whether you’re traveling for personal or business reasons, experts say there are a few tech travel tips you should always carry with you. Christopher Grove with Best Buy joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. Tuesday with some advice on what to know before you go, and some tips for while you’re traveling.

Before you leave, Grove says you should protect your personal information by clearing the browser history on your internet-connected devices and making sure you have a password on your devices.

Also, alert your bank and credit card companies about your trip so they don’t flag your purchases when you try to buy something away from home. He says sometimes companies will put a hold on your account as a safety precaution if a suspicious charge shows up.

If you’re planning on taking pictures or videos while traveling, Grove recommends clearing out your phone’s storage so you have plenty of space for documenting all your memory-making. He says you can also replace your memory card so you have a fresh one for your trip.

When traveling abroad you may want to take an adapter to be sure you can plug in your electronics. You can avoid any roaming charges by switching the settings on your phone to only allow it to use WiFi, according to Grove. He adds there are apps that allow you to text and even call for free without using your data plan or racking up excess charges.

Finally, protect your technology with cases and screen protectors that will allow you to take it wherever you go without worrying about it getting damage. Grove suggests cases that are waterproof, especially if you’re planning on heading to the beach or anywhere near water.
