LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – A giant cross dominates part of Highway 52 in Lake City and is catching the attention of many who drive by.It’s difficult to miss, and those who helped build it say that’s the point.
John Elzey and his wife Donna Elzey traveled from Lamar Sunday afternoon to check out what they call the talk of the town.
“For a lack of words, it’s awesome. I think that we need more of this in our country because our country was founded on Christian belief and this is what it’s all about right here,” said Elzey.
Mike Denny also stopped by the cross in Lake City while on his way back to Myrtle Beach.
“I thought it must’ve been an inflatable cross for Easter but when I pulled up I noticed it’s quite a structure,” Denny said.
A.Q. Lee of Lee’s Construction says the cross was built in a one acre field for a Lake City organization called “At the Foot of the Cross”.
“We’re hoping that everybody who looks at it will realize that the cross is there because we want everyone to know that Christ died for our sins,” mentioned Lee.
Lee says the arms of the cross is 64 feet wide, weighs more than one hundred thousand pounds and can tackle winds up to 145 miles per hour.
Those who drove by to take a look at the cross say they want to see more of these crosses.
“Matter of fact when we pulled up she said wonder why they haven’t done anything like this in Florence yet,” added Elzey.
“People are not so agreeable to church business anymore so lord only knows, but yea it would be great to see more of it, of course,” explained Denny.
Lee says the next step will be to put lights around the cross so people can see it better at night. He also says there will be park benches put around the cross.
