MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – With scattered rain expected through most of the weekend, the National Weather Service released some wet weather driving tips for those traveling along the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the vast majority of weather-related car crashes happen on wet pavement while it’s raining.
Weather experts say common sense is the best defense against harsh weather when you’re behind the wheel.
- Slow down
- Allow more travel time
- Allow twice the normal following distance between cars to provide ample room for stopping
- Do not use cruise control
- Avoid hard breaking or turning sharply
- Make sure your headlights are on in the rain – it’s the law
- If you feel your car beginning to skid, continue to look and steer in the direction you want the car to go. Don’t panic, and avoid slamming on the brakes to maintain control.
