GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – A South Carolina couple is in jail after a 4-year-old was treated in a Greenville hospital for a head injury and multiple abrasions.

Jacobi Watkins and Markidia Evans are charged with unlawful neglect of a child, according to Greenville Police. Watkins is also charged with attempted murder.

Police say the incident happened at an apartment on Shemwood Lane in Greenville. Warrants confirm the little girl was physically abused and was being treated at the emergency room.

The young victim had a puncture wound to her head along with multiple abrasions, according to the warrant.

Markidia Evans, the victim’s mother, says she saw her boyfriend, Jacobi Watkins, wrap his hands around the girl’s neck and shake her to get her to quit crying. The warrant goes on to say Watkins threw the girl down a flight of stairs and banged her head on the top step causing the puncture.

Evans says she didn’t call the police, but did tell Watkins to stop.

The warrants say that Evans had an active case with the Department of Social Services and was told Watkins was to have no contact with her children.
