LATTA, SC (WBTW) – More residents in the Latta community along Railroad Avenue and surrounding streets have seen the rusty water in their homes.
Krystal Powers says brown water has poured out of the faucets ever since she moved into her home and she’s getting restless. She says she has to clean the shower constantly because of the stains left behind.
“Why would you want to put your children in a tub that looks like that when you know that’s the outcome of it when the water is gone,” said Powers.
And the rusty water has made such a big mess, she stopped buying white dish cloths to wash her dishes.
News 13 reached out to Latta Town Administrator Jarrett Taylor about the water problem. Taylor says that even though the water may not look the best it is safe for residents.
But some residents say drinking brown water is out of the question.
“At least it should be clean, we’re paying for it and then we still have to go out of pocket and go to a store and pay for water that we’re already paying for here. That’s crazy to me,” explained Samantha Yarborough.
In fact some residents spend more than $30 a week just for clear water.
“I actually use it to cook my food, and we use it to brush our teeth. I just can’t afford to buy enough to put in a tub to wash with,” Powers said.
Latta Town Administrator Jarrett Taylor says the town received a water quality report Friday afternoon and the water met state standards according to DHEC regulations. He says if residents would like to see a copy of the report to come to Latta Town hall.
According to Taylor the town has replaced pipes on three streets and over 20 service lines. He says the town will be applying for rural infrastructure grants and community development block grants to replace the old lines throughout Latta.
