CONWAY, S.C. (AP) – A proposed Horry County ordinance could force all businesses serving alcohol to close at 2 a.m.
Local media outlets report members of the county council’s public safety committee discussed the proposal Monday.
County Deputy Attorney Wes Covington says some bars currently have a 2 a.m. “last call” policy that can encourage patrons to order several pitchers of beer at the last minute. Forcing the bars to shut down at 2 a.m. would change that.
Sheriff Phillip Thompson questioned the county’s ability to enforce a closing time, saying bars circumvented a similar rule years ago by becoming private clubs.
Covington says he would do further research and report back to the committee, which could then send the proposal to the full council.
