PICKENS, S.C. (AP) – Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the death of an inmate at the county jail.
Authorities say a 34-year-old male inmate was found hanged from a sheet in a jail bathroom about 2 a.m. on Saturday. Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the man as Michael Morris. She said the death was caused by hanging and was ruled a suicide.
The sheriff said the inmate had been jailed since late June on multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.
The inmate was housed by himself in arraignment room being used as a cell because of jail overcrowding. The jail was built in 1974 with a capacity of 93 inmates. There are currently 208 inmates being housed at the jail.
