LAKE CITY, SC – On Friday, The Class of 1963 of J. Paul Truluck School of Lake City High will dedicated a monument honoring past, present and future district teachers and staff on the grounds of Main Street Elementary School.
“You know when we were in high school we didn’t realize how special the teaching staff was that we had. As we got a little older maybe we got a little smarter,” said Joe Webb, President of the Class of ’63.
Out of the 93 students in the class of ’63, 24 of them went on to be teachers.
Nick Lee and Henry Lyerly, both members of the Class of 1963, proposed the monument to the district’s board of trustees last fall.
“At our 50th reunion we tossed around the idea of doing a little something as a class to recognize our teachers. We decided that this would be a really good thing to do,” Webb mentioned.
The inscription on the monument reads: “Dedicated to the caring teachers of Lake City schools who have gone before us, those with us now, and those yet to come for instilling the skills needed for success in our journey through life.”
The monument, funded by members of the class, is 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide with a black marble Panther inlaid on its face. The monument also features a granite bench and a brick walkway leading to the monument.
