Have You Heard, singer/songwriter/pianist Jerry Lee Lewis turns 80 years old today (9/29).
Nicknamed “the Killer,” Lewis was, without a doubt, a Rock and Roll pioneer. Among other things, he was, with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, a part of the “Sun Records Million Dollar Quartet” and is its last surviving member.
He’s a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
However (perhaps due to controversies), despite 30 top-10 country hits (and 6 number ones), he is not a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Dizzy Gillespie, who was born in Cheraw, first played New York’s Carnegie Hall 68 years ago today.
He was 29.
The New York baseball Giants played their last game at New York’s Polo Grounds 58 years ago today.
Famed baseball manager Casey Stengel died 40 years ago today.
Famed actor Tony Curtis died five years ago today. Both were 85.
John Roberts was 50 when he was sworn-in ten years ago today (9/29/2005) as the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
“My Three Sons,” which starred Fred MacMurray, premiered 55 years ago on ABC.
It ran 12 seasons, five on ABC and the final seven on CBS. It supposedly moved to CBS because ABC at the time didn’t want to commit the money it would take to shoot the show in color.
The Chevrolet Camaro first went on sale 49 years ago today.
GM originally called the car the “Panther” and it was created to help compete against Ford’s new muscle car, the Mustang.
Before its introduction, however, Chevrolet changed the name to “Camaro,” in great part because many of Chevys other models started with a “C.” Cars like the Corvette, the Corvair and the Chevelle.
Today is International Coffee Day and VFW Day.
