Have You Heard, today (10/2) marks 65 years since the first “Peanuts” comic strip was published.
Charles M. Schulz’ continuing series about Charlie Brown and friends debuted in nine newspapers.
The strip ran for nearly 50 years and, at its peak, it ran in more than 2,600 papers.
The McCoys had two top-10 hits and one number one. That was “Hang on Sloopy” (not to be confused with Schulz’ character “Snoopy”) and it topped the charts 50 years ago today (10/2/1965).
Singer/songwriter Don McLean turns 70 today.
The Recording Industry Association of America named McLean’s hit “American Pie” as number-five on its list of the top songs of the 20th Century. The only songs to top “American Pie” were: 4. “Respect” by Aretha Franklin”; 3. “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie; 2. “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby; and, 1. “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland.
McLean was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
Sting was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. He turns 64 today.
Actor Rock Hudson died of AIDS-related complications 30 years ago today. He was only 59.
Thurgood Marshall was 59 when he was sworn-in as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court 48 years ago today (10/2/1967).
Marshall was the first African-American member of the high court and served one day short of 34 years.
He was 84 when he died in 1993.
