WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – If you filed for an extension, the deadline to file your tax returns is Thursday.

Time is running out if you are one of the 13 million Americans who filed for extra time; the deadline is October 15th.

If you filed for a six month extension back in April and have yet to file your returns, you have a couple options to avoid penalties or interest. You can still file and make payments online through IRS Free File and direct pay. Those programs are available on IRS.gov.

Ray Maagero of Liberty Tax explains, “E-filing allows you to switch your tax return right away, but you can also mail it to on the 15th. You can certainly mail your tax return on the 15th as long as it’s post marked by the 15th you’ll be fine. But e-filing is obviously the fastest way and you’re going to get your money the fastest.”

There are also options for people who are having trouble paying their taxes.

“We call those installment agreements, which you can enter into and pay over a period of time and pay interest and get your tax return filed so you’re not subject to additional penalties,” explains Maagero. “There’s also tax resolution possibilities where you might be able to offer a certain amount of money, which is less than the amount that you owe.”

If you plan to take one of those options, Maagero suggests you meet with an expert to help you figure out an exact plan.
