MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- Horry county’s leaders will meet tonight and discuss how to stop puppy and kitty mills. County officials have found several animal mills around the county over the past two years.  Leaders say animals from these mills often have health issues and they want to regulate breeders to avoid these problems.

In the weeks that followed the puppy mill busts, many asked state representatives for stricter laws in these situations but they said most of the work has to happen on local levels. Now, Horry county council proposed amendments to the county’s mill ordinance that would require safer and healthier conditions for animals owned by breeders. All pets of breeders would have to get mandatory shots and vaccines and the new amendments prevent anyone charged with breaking the ordinance from selling pets in the county again.

Many people have asked for stricter punishment but, the penalties for violating the ordinance have not changed. The ordinance will still remain as a misdemeanor crime at most.

Horry county council’s meeting is at 6 tonight. Council members want public input but if you would like to speak, you’re required to sign up before the meeting.

Count on News13 to keep you up to date as more develops on mill regulations.
