GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW)- Governor Nikki Haley helped host a “Team South Carolina” event for Horry and Georgetown counties. The event to place at the Beck Recreation Center in Georgetown and brought several state and federal agencies together to help people hurt by the flood.
“They’re able to go to the different entities that they need help from because everyone’s situation is a little bit different,” said FEMA Media Relations Specialist Cheria Brown.
Residents that attended could register for financial assistance from FEMA, apply for disaster loans and learn about repairing and flood proofing.They could also apply for unemployment benefits, food and financial assistance. Representatives from each agency were available to answer any questions.
Yvonne Trapier attended the event looking for peace of mind.
“Coming out here today was great to find out a lot of information because I was really lost,” she said.
Trapier says her home was damaged in the flood. She applied for financial assistance through FEMA, but was denied.
“Through all that I have been through, coming here today really relieved me on trying to get help,” said Trapier. ” They had so many organizations in there.”
She also learned that a denial doesn’t mean you’re not eligible for assistance.
“You can get help, you can. You just have to take the time,” explained Trapier. ” You have 60 days and they will help you because that’s what they are here for.”
Governor Nikki Haley also stopped by to fill supply boxes and give a message to those still recovering.
“We got you. I know this is hard but this is not a one stop for us this is the first stop and we’re going to keep going until we get you all of the answers that you need,” stated Haley.
Governor Haley says Team South Carolina is just phase one of the recovery process. She says phase 2 is rebuilding.
