COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD) – Joey Meek, the man accused of lying to federal authorities during the investigation into the Emanuel AME shooting massacre, has been released on bond.
During a hearing Wednesday, a federal judge accepted the $25,000 bond, freeing Meek. That bond, however, has several stipulations.
First, Meek is prohibited from obtaining a passport or leaving South Carolina. He will be required to wear an ankle monitor and live with his grandparents. Meek cannot have contact with any of the witnesses or victims, including his brothers and his girlfriend. He will be subject to a mental health test and substance abuse treatment.
A federal judge lowered Meek’s bond from $100,000 to $25,000 last month, citing his nonviolent past and lack of hard drug use.
Meek is charged with failing to report Dylann Roof’s plans to shoot parishioners at Emanuel AME church in June. He’s also charged with lying to investigators about what he knew about those plans.
Meek is on probation. He pleaded guilty in March to possessing a stolen vehicle. Meek’s attorney said last month that Meek had been in solitary confinement since his Sept. 17 arrest.
The trial now moves to Charleston and Judge Richard Gergel’s court.
