EFFINGHAM, SC (WBTW) – Residents who live along Oliver Road in Effingham say because of the speed limit, it was only a matter of time before something bad happened right at their front door.
“If you just sit here and watch the road you will see speeders go by and we’re not talking 55 or 60 miles per hour, we’re talking 70s and 80s,” Oliver Road resident Jason Springs said.
The speed limit on Oliver Road in Effingham is 55 miles per hour. So when neighbors heard about the deadly crash they were saddened but not surprised.
“There’s not a huge police presence down through here, it’s a long straight stretch of road so people do tend to drive very fast,” said Michael Coward.
Brent Shedd also lives along Oliver Road. He says that not only has he seen people speed but race.
“You’ll hear the trucks, the ones that have the exhaust modifier, you’ll see them coming and going,” mentioned Shedd.
“I mean you could hear them start down at the beginning of the road and just see how fast they can go,” explained Coward.
Shedd says he is constantly picking up cans and alcoholic containers in his yard and that proves his point that people are drinking and driving.
The scene brought back memories for Jason Springs when he saw police block off the road early Sunday morning.
“I was hit not too far from where they were by a drunk driver. Me and my brother were in a vehicle. We had one that made a u-turn right down that road and he hit us close to where that accident was as well,” Springs said.
So after the deaths of two people, neighbors say they want a change.
“They were always nice and friendly people. They would always wave so it was a shock that we did have an incident of that nature here being that extreme, but this is a road where we do have a lot of speeders,” Springs added.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol say around 5:45 Sunday morning the driver of a Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling south on Oliver Road in Effingham and hit a moped. The driver and passenger on the moped died at the scene.
