MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The City of Myrtle Beach conducted a survey this past winter to learn more about the likes and dislikes of local seniors.

City officials say the results of the survey revealed a surprising number of Myrtle Beach’s seniors use computers regularly and rely on Facebook and other Internet resources for much of their information. It also shows that seniors take full advantage of all that Myrtle Beach has to offer.

The city reports nearly 380 seniors answered the survey, with 68.5 percent in the 55 to 70 age bracket. Approximately two thirds (65.8 percent) were permanent residents, while the rest were snowbirds.

Retirees dominated the group, but 11.4 percent still worked full-time and 9.1 percent worked part-time. And at least 36 percent volunteered their time for a good cause.

According to the survey, nearly half dine out two or three times a week and 20 percent dine out four-plus times each week. Seventy-one percent ask for senior discounts when dining or shopping.

The survey also revealed more than 93 percent use a computer, 90 percent use e-mail and 60 percent use Facebook. In addition, 7.7 percent of seniors in the survey use Twitter, and 6.2 percent use Instagram.

Many people see Myrtle Beach as a great golf destination, but only four percent of seniors surveyed indicate that they enjoy golf. However, 67.2 percent choose exercising and walking as their top interest, 58.3 percent enjoy movies and 55.2 percent enjoy reading.
