GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – After a four week investigation, Georgetown Police arrested a newly elected Georgetown City Councilman in connection with a sex crime against a minor, police report.
According to a Facebook post from Georgetown Police, Sheldon Amonda Butts, 43, of Georgetown, is charged with attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor third degree. The four week investigation concluded with the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s office authorizing the criminal charge, police add.
On November 3, Butts was voted in as one of Georgetown’s new city council members. Butts received 901 votes, enough to finish third in the contest behind Al Joseph and Clarence Smalls.
Butts posted to his campaign Facebook page November 5, two days before turning himself in to police, that “I have a vision of where to lead Georgetown in the future, always making sure to keep our special City livable for all.”
Butts turned himself in to law enforcement at the Georgetown County Detention Center Saturday morning. According to online booking records from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, Butts was booked into jail Saturday at 11:44 a.m. and was released at 2:14 p.m. the same day on $20,000 bond. Judge Robert O’Donnell was scheduled to oversee Butts’ bond hearing.
