FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – On Wednesday, hundreds filled the Florence Veterans Park to pay tribute to those who served.
The Veterans Day ceremony included honoring the men and women of the Air Force, with the addition of 36 new names to the Wall of Honor.
“We were blessed. Just couldn’t be a better day,” said Barry Wingard, Chairman of the Florence Veterans Park.
Air Force vet Malcolm Attaway attended the ceremony with his family.
“I am a veteran and celebrating Veterans Day,” he stated.
Attaway is fresh off of hip surgery and used the day to also celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
“I came out yesterday. It didn’t go as well as we had hoped,” Attaway mentioned.
Until Wednesday, he wasn’t even sure if he would attend, nor did he plan for a surprise from his wife.
“He going have his name on a plague and dedicated on the wall. He doesn’t know that,” she said.
“I know now,” Attaway then said smiling, as his wife kissed him on the cheek.
He is one of 36 names added to the Wall of Honor. Two and half years ago Attaway and his family ditched the cold winters in upstate New York to move to Florence.
“I got tired of the winters. It would snow in October,” he said.
However, on an ideally perfect day for a Veteran’s ceremony, he sat comfortably.
