FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – News13 has new information regarding an assisted-living facility in Florence. Back in August, News13 exposed the Carriage House of Florence for having bed bugs, along with a lack of food for residents.
Over the last few months, News13’s Nick Sturdivant has checked with the Department of Health and Environmental Control as it conducted monthly inspections. During DHEC’s August inspections, investigators uncovered bed begs initially.
As of its September 24th inspection, DHEC noted that “several residents and staff were interviewed and stated that they did not see any bed bugs and were not being bitten anymore. However, there was one resident who complained about being bitten.”
According to the report, the owner stated that Terminix comes out to the facility to treat any problem areas.
DHEC’s recent inspection on October 29th documents a list of violations. The report states that there was “a heavy accumulation of food splatter was observed on the inside top of the microwave oven in the kitchen.”
It also goes on to say that “live flies were observed in the kitchen and dining room areas, and dead insects were observed in the light fixtures in the dining room.”
According to the report, “stacks of plastic plates were observed lying on top of the metal serving counter with the eating sides exposed to possible contamination and not covered or inverted.”
The facility received a 91 percent on that inspection.
One resident told News13 that the facility has been cleaner and a bit better, but the resident claims roaches are still present. DHEC tells News13 inspectors found no bed bugs during its October visit, but the facility has 15 days to send a plan of correction from its latest inspection.
Another visit is planned for next month and DHEC will, once again, check for bed bugs.
