MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – A Bennettsville man was arrested Thursday after police in California contacted the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office to inform deputies that “a considerable amount of high grade, exotic marijuana” was being shipped to South Carolina.

According to Sheriff Fred Knight, Walter Jones Jr., 25, of Bennettsville, is charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and one charge of conspiracy.

Sheriff Knight says Jones is accused being the recipient of a package from Eureka, California containing “a considerable amount of high grade, exotic marijuana.” Officials intercepted the package coming to Bennettsville on Thursday and discovered the box contained illegal narcotics.

Deputies say a controlled delivery of the package was made to the home of Jones’ aunt, where the sheriff’s office conducted video and audio surveillance. When Jones arrived at the home and had custody of the package, he was arrested by deputies. Search warrants were obtained for the home and Jones’ car, where deputies seized marijuana, a handgun and cash, along with Jones’ car.

The drugs were concealed to appear to be a Christmas present to a child, and that was consistent with what was found in California, Sheriff Knight adds. Officials say the marijuana had somewhere between a $25k to $30k street value.

Jones’ bond was set on both charges at $200,000.
