White powder in Conway mailbox ‘not harmful,’ police say

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The scene of a hazmat situation at a home on Sassafras Lane has been cleared after police say the white powder isn’t hazardous.

Horry County Fire Rescue responded to the scene of a hazmat situation on Sassafras Lane Monday evening, according to Battalion Chief Brian VanAernem with Horry County Fire Rescue.

Chief VanAernem says Horry County Fire Rescue received the emergency call around 6:10 p.m. in regards to a “hazmat incident,” but could not go into detail regarding any injuries or potential danger at the house on Sassafras Lane, just off of Hwy 544, in Conway.

Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County Police confirms officers also responded to the scene investigating the situation. Lt. Denis says officers were called to the Conway home when a white powder substance was found in a mailbox of a home on Sassafras Lane.

Horry County Police asked that drivers and residents of the neighborhood avoid the street as crews worked the scene for about an hour Monday night. Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Horry County Police gave the all clear, posting to the department’s Twitter account that, “All clear on Sassafras and Pepperwood. Substance not harmful.”
