A group of Myrtle Beach medics gave a young girl a Thanksgiving meal after she missed hers, because she was in the hospital.

Thanksgiving is a day most people spend with their loved ones.

However a lot of people have to work and don’t get to spend time with their family.

Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue Paramedic Richard Palmer and EMT Matt Morris both worked 24 hour shifts on Thanksgiving.

Between them they have two decades of service to the city and say they’re used to missing Thanksgiving, but one of their patients was not as ok missing the holiday.

“It was just a father, and mother, and daughter and they couldn’t go with the rest of the family. And Thanksgiving Holiday is when you should go with your family,” said Palmer.

According to their battalion chief one young special needs girl had a medical emergency.

Palmer tells me the emergency forced the young girl to miss a holiday tradition, dinner with her family in Myrtle Beach.

“Matt and I were talking to them and kind of felt it’s a bummer that you don’t get to do that,” said Palmer. “We have some guys that have mad skills in the kitchen,” he added.

So what else was there to do, but invited the family to the Station 1 for a late Thanksgiving dinner.

Palmer and Morris say they were just doing their job serving the community in a different kind of way.

“Maybe asking them for dinner, saying we have extra food, is a little out of the ordinary,” said Palmer.

Usually the duties EMTS and paramedics have to a patient ends as soon as they arrive at the hospital.

But Thursday, Morris and Palmer were able to make sure their patient not only got the proper medical treatment, but also had a good holiday.

“There is not a lot we can always do for people but we have plenty of food and we can hook somebody up that’s what we’re going to do,” said Palmer.

Medical records and information are protected under HIPAA laws and because of that News 13 was unable to reach the family.

However, Morris and Palmer say they were very grateful and took pictures with the entire fire rescue department.
