JOHNSONVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Two months after the flood, many families are still left to rebuild in areas across the Pee Dee and along the Grand Strand.

One of the hardest hit areas was in Johnsonville. Now, a group called God’s Pit Crew is working to give homes to people in that area who lost everything to the flood.

Now, Debbie Mcalister looks back at the scattered pieces left from her home damaged by the flood, but she says she knew God would open a door.

That door was God’s Pit Crew, a group of people who traveled from Virginia to bring Mcalister a brand-new home.

It’s one of many projects the group is working on in Johnsonville, and it’s help that homeowners say is emotionally overwhelming.

“It’s been very emotional that you know that up until God’s pit crew came in, we didn’t know where we were going to live or how we were going to get our things back,” said Mcalister.

Randy Johnson is the Director of God’s Pit Crew and says the group consists of about 35 people who left their lives back home to help people in the Pee Dee.

“Everybody blows up their air mattresses and throws them on the floor, we bring our own cooks to cook our own meals, and we have our own mobile shower trailer that we carry with us that has shower stalls and washer and dryers. So, if we can find a building to lay down in, we’re pretty self-sufficient,” said Johnson.

The family will move in their new home this Saturday, and Mcalister says she know what she’ll do first.

“Probably cry. I’m just going to take it all in because it feels like a dream. You know, I just don’t know what to expect, to be able to come home,” said Mcalister.

God’s Pit Crew is fully funded by donations from different churches, fundraisers, and people like you.
