CONWAY- Conway wide receiver Bryan Edwards is committed to South Carolina- again.
Edwards pulled his original commitment after South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier unexpectedly stepped down mid-season. The change caused Edwards to reevaluate if South Carolina was still the best fit for him. After a home visit from new head coach Will Muschamp, Edwards is back on board.
“I decided last night. I was talking to my parents talking about everything and I decided this is what I really wanted to do,” Edwards said Tuesday. “Finally I can just get some sleep it feels like I’ve been losing sleep over this for a while and finally I can just get some sleep it’s a huge weight off my back.”
For Edwards, South Carolina was a front runner all along. At the age of 13, his first two offers came from the Gamecocks and Clemson. However, it’s offer number three that stands out now.
“I was one of the youngest kids he offered,” Edwards said.
Former Florida coach Will Muschamp was the third coach to get to the young athlete. Fast forward four years later and Muschamp got a shot at Edwards again, this time for the Gamecocks.
“Ever time i go up there, he’s like, ‘Let’s complete the story. I recruited you at Florida, now I’m recruiting you at South Carolina,'” Edwards explained.
Up until Tuesday, there was another school back in the mix. Edwards had to pick between the Gamecocks and the Tigers.
“Clemson I always felt like I could call it home but South Carolina I called it home for such a long time it just felt right,” Edwards said.
He announced his decision on Twitter, writing “#Boooommm” with Gamecocks emoji.
“I kind of talked to Coach Muschamp, got to know him as a person got to know the people I’m going to be around and that kind of sold it for me,” Edwards said.
He wasn’t the only one sold on the decision. Throughout the day Tuesday, the South Carolina commit heard from some of the Palmetto State’s top athletes.
“I actually heard from Tajh Boyd, Marcus Lattimore, players at South Carolina, Connor Shaw. So I heard from a lot of big names,” Edwards said.
The biggest name to make an impact on him though was Will Muschamp.
“He’s about business. I know I trust in him to turn that program around because he’s a really great guy and a really great coach,” Edwards said.
The Gamecocks new coach showed Edwards that while circumstances may change, it’s nice to go back to the ones who’ve been there all along.
