DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Darlington Police Chief Danny Watson took to Facebook Wednesday to warn community members of phone scams reported in the city.

According to Chief Watson’s post, scam artists are targeting Darlington residents in phone calls identifying themselves as IRS agents.

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news during the holiday,” Chief Watson writes, “our phone scams have started again in earnest.”

Chief Watson goes on to warn community members that the Internal Revenue Service will not call you. They will send you correspondence, and if anyone calls you claiming to be with the IRS, “don’t give them your banking information.”

Thieves make a living scamming people on the phone and through mail, cautions Chief Watson.

“The best thing to do is to not answer the phone when you get calls from there unless you know someone from there who is calling because they know you,” concludes Chief Watson.

If you feel you have been the victim of an IRS scam, call your local law enforcement office.
