MARION, SC (WBTW) – As you unwrap those Christmas gifts, your Christmas trash is likely to start accumulating, and emergency management officials are warning you to be careful about what you put on the side of the road.

“After Christmas morning, and you know, after all of the kids have opened all of their gifts and stuff, take a little bit of time to compact the boxes,” said Jerry Williams with Marion County Emergency Management.

Williams says people will be out traveling around neighborhoods, and they could be scouting your home.

“With people who are planning on robbing from you and those who are not honest, you know, we have to be diligent in ourselves,” said Williams.

Emergency management officials say it’s important to make sure your trash can will completely close. Doing so will not only keep your Christmas presents safe, but it could also keep you from paying a pretty heavy fine.

Trash that you leave on the curb that blows out of your yard could cause you to pay hundreds of dollars in fines for littering.

“Throw them in the back of your truck or throw them in the trunk of your car, and when the recycling centers open next week, take them there so that way they aren’t staying outside all weekend and letting people know what you got in the house,” said Williams.

If your trash company won’t pick up for the next few days, Williams says you should visit your county’s environmental services website for a list of drop-off locations.
