MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Police in Myrtle Beach are seeking funds to install license plate readers at entrances to the city.
Local media outlets report the readers would be in addition to a $2 million project to install 800 traffic cameras around the city. That work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The license plate readers would snap photos of the license plates of passing cars. Software with the system could alert dispatch officers to vehicles wanted in criminal cases, missing persons or cases in which vehicles have been stolen.
The department has been asked to present more details on the specifics of the license readers and the cost of the project to city council at its meeting next week.
