COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – George Smythe is a third-year law student at the University of South Carolina, but he’s a Clemson fan. “I’ve hated USC since the first game, and probably will hate USC for the rest of my life,” he says. He’s a Clemson fan because he got his undergraduate degree there.
He graduated from Clemson in 2013, which means while he was a student there USC beat Clemson every single year. USC won five in a row from 2009 through 2013. Clemson won in 2014 and 2015. He doesn’t usually wear Clemson t-shirts or other gear around campus, but, “Last year when we won, I did wear a hoodie around for a couple of days. Wore it through the Russell House (student union) and got some nice looks over there, so it was good.” Besides the looks, he says he got a few “words” too, but nothing too bad.
He says he enjoyed the small-town feel at Clemson more than he likes USC, which is in the middle of the state capital. “Columbia, you know, it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I like it fine, but the worst thing about Columbia is probably the Gamecocks,” he says.
He plans to watch the national championship game at home. “I wish I was there. I wish I wasn’t here, but I’m going to go all in, all out, however you want to say it,” he says.
