Have You Heard, today (9/19) marks the 55th anniversary of when South Carolina’s very own Chubby Checker hit number-one on the Billboard chart with “The Twist.”
The song, which also sparked a worldwide dance craze, spent only one week at number one.
However, in 1962, it was re-released and hit number-one again. That’s the first and only time the exact same song with the exact same artist did that.
Checker (born Ernest Evans in Georgetown County in October of 1941) also hit the top-10 in 1961 with “Let’s Twist Again.”

Diana Ross had six number-one hits as a solo artist and the first of those six, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” hit the top spot 45 years ago today.

South Carolina’s junior U.S. senator Tim Scott turns 50 today.

Perhaps the greatest-ever Gamecock quarterback, Connor Shaw, is 24 today.

Popcorn guru Orville Redenbacher died 20 years ago today at the age of 88.

Today is also AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, Coastal Clean-up Day, National Gymnastics Day and Talk Like a Pirate Day!

You can see “Have You Heard” each weeknight after weather on News13 at 11:00.
